“As to you, O ye other handmaids who are enamoured of the heavenly fragrances, arrange ye holy gatherings, and found ye Spiritual Assemblies, for these are the basis for spreading the sweet savours of God, exalting His Word, uplifting the lamp of His grace, promulgating His religion and promoting His Teachings, and what bounty is there greater than this? These Spiritual Assemblies are aided by the Spirit of God. Their defender is ‘Abdu’l-Bahá. Over them He spreadeth His wings. What bounty is there greater than this? These Spiritual Assemblies are shining lamps and heavenly gardens, from which the fragrances of holiness are diffused over all regions, and the lights of knowledge are shed abroad over all created things. From them the spirit of life streameth in every direction. They, indeed, are the potent sources of the progress of man, at all times and under all conditions. What bounty is there greater than this?”

(Abdu’l-Baha, Selections from the Writings of Abdu’l-Baha, p. 80).

When I was a new Baha’i, aged 19, in Shrewsbury, in 1975, I asked to host a 19 Day Feast in my mother and father’s house, and was summoned to consult with the Local Assembly, the Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of Shrewsbury. To me, newly enroled in the Faith, newly deepened by Dr Heshmat Ta’eed in the Covenant of Baha’u’llah, it felt like going to consult with His, Baha’u’llah’s, House of Justice itself. After two Pilgrimages to the Holy Land in 1977 and 1984, arguably as a tourist, when I felt deepened in mh heart as a Baha’i sufficiently, I went again, in 2007, but on a 3 Day Visit. This time my heart was full and I was there much more as a pilgrim rather than a tourist. In the first day, we were taken on a tour of the Arc, to visit, as I remember, the Seat of the International Teaching Centre and the Centre for the Study of the Holy Texts. In the ITC Building I felt moved, to tears, though I don’t remember my thoughts there. Next, in the Seat of the House, as I stood at the threshold between a waiting area, and an area to the left of the council chamber of the House, an area which included a desk for a receptionist, and at the far end a portrait of The Master, ‘Abdu’l-Baha, taken from a photograph circa 1912 taken during His tours of the west, I contempleted where I was. I remembered the prophesies of Micah and Isaiah,

2,1 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2,2 And it shall come to pass in the end of days, that the mountain of the LORD’S house shall be established as the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. 2,3 And many peoples shall go and say: ‘Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths.’ For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 2,4 And He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

(Nev’im (Prophets), Yeshayahu (Isaiah)),

I felt that THIS is that House, that THIS is what those verses from the Bible were referring to, despite its being in Haifa and not Jerusalem. THAT might be just a test from God to test his followers, as when Muhammad changed the Qiblih from Jerusalem to Mecca, causing a few to fall away and lose their faith. That THIS is the House of God, which has been anticipated with great heart-felt longing for THOUSANDS of years, that global, universal salvation, anticipated and longed for since the beginning of the Adamic Prophetic Cycle. This is the Day of God, the advent of His Divine Justice, and here I am, standing at the Threshold of the House’s Council Chamber, whilst most of mankind has no idea. I wept for maybe 5 minutes, for having been given such a priceless privilege, to have this knowledge, when although this majestic, beautiful building is hiding in plain sight, most of mankind is totally unaware of this divine blessing having been bestowed on this small planet. That same feeling of awe at being able to witness such blessings, at being aware of this incredibly epic religious historical Revelation, filled my heart at Summer School a few years back, when due to incredible technology, Tom Price’s beautiful music accompanying the chanting of Baha’u’llah and the prisoners in the Siyah Chal, the Black Pit, dungeon of Tihran in 1852, when Baha’u’llah’s Revelation started. He had coached an impromptu choir to sing the words, as his technology made it feel that a huge orchestra was playing in front of us, and almost like being in Tihran in 1852 and hearing the chanting of the Babis from the Shah’s Palace, that epic, technicolour, 1950s religious event filled me with a feeling of awe at witnessing such a momentous, overpowering, overwhelmingly powerful, world-changing religious happening, and again I wept buckets.

Such are the Spiritual Assemblies and future Houses of Justice, and THE House of Justice, dawning places to me of His Divine Authority, and Grace. Reminds me of Adib (Taherzadeh) explaining how those institutions are virtually invisible to the bulk of the people these days, and they have no idea of the spiritual reality of these institutions, which to them are defined, not by the Word of God, but by the earthly qualifications of those blessed with the honour of serving on them, their academic attainments, their nationality, their insignificant and irrelevant earthly rank. All that is of no account, when compared with the authority vested in these institutions by Almighty God, through His Pen, Baha’u’llah. Ya Baha’u’l-Abha!
